Topeka, Kan., Oct. 10, 2014 — Learning is more fun with a friend and a field trip. That’s why Westar Energy’s Corporate Bigs program is heading to Education Station substation, an outdoor classroom where together Bigs and Littles will learn how electricity gets to their homes and school.

Corporate Bigs, a partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters, pairs employees at Westar’s general office with students from Williams Science and Fine Arts Magnet School. The program exposes students to different career opportunities as well as provides STEM (science, technology, engineering and math)-based mentoring.

The field trip to Education Station will take place from 4-5 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 14, at Topeka Public Schools’ Kanza Science and Education Park. Media are invited to attend. To access the site from I-70, take the MacVicar exit and turn south on MacVicar; then turn right onto Kanza Drive (the northernmost entrance from MacVicar).

Education Station supports STEM curriculum. Vibrant colors help identify key parts of the substation, including transformers and switches. From the safe vantage point of a pavilion that overlooks the substation, entire classes can get a view of the equipment. Signs around the substation explain how the various pieces of equipment work. Education Station is also a working substation to strengthen Topeka’s electric system for decades to come, while allowing Westar to retire five World War II-era substations.
