How does Westar Wind work?

Green-e Certified ProgramWestar Wind is a Green-e certified program. Green‑e Energy is the nation’s leading certification program for renewable energy. For nearly two decades, Green‑e Energy has provided oversight for voluntary renewable energy transactions in North America. The Green-e Energy label certifies that Westar Wind meets strict environmental and consumer protection standards established by the non-profit Center for Resource Solutions.

How does Westar Wind work?

The Westar Wind program gives you the ability to support the development of wind power sources throughout Kansas. Here's how it works:

When you sign up for the program, a small additional charge is added to your bill. We take the amount of energy you use and the equivalent amount of certified wind power is delivered to the power grid.

The nature of the power grid doesn’t allow us to separate different electrons by their source. So, the energy generated at our wind farms doesn’t go directly into your home. Instead, it goes onto the power grid with all of the other electrons. But, when you sign up for Westar Wind you are making a difference.

Your commitment to Westar Wind ensures that a specified amount of electricity is produced from wind sources. The energy you support is delivered directly onto the power grid. This helps to reduce the need for energy from fossil fuel sources like oil and coal. And it means that more of the electricity being put onto the power grid comes from renewable energy sources rather than traditional generation.

Where does my money go?

Your dollars are used to purchase Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs).

When our wind farms operate, they generate electricity that is delivered onto the power grid. The power grid is segmented into regional power pools; in our case, it’s the Southwest Power Pool. One way to make it so more renewable energy sources will be built is through the sale of RECs. A renewable energy provider (such as the Westar’s wind farms) is credited with one REC for every 1,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) or 1 megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity it produces. (To put it in perspective, the average residential customer uses about 1,000 kWh per month.) An independent agency (such as the Center for Resource Solutions through their Green-e program) verifies and certifies the renewable energy product. The renewable energy is then fed into the power grid and the accompanying REC can then be sold to customers separately from the power generated.

By purchasing the RECs behind Westar Wind to cover your energy consumption, you are paying the difference between market rate and the production rate, allowing more renewable energy producers to enter the competitive marketplace. You are purchasing all legal rights to the benefits renewable energy creates such as the emissions avoided and the economic benefit to rural communities that our wind farms are in. In this way, you make a difference. By committing to Westar Wind you are helping generate a market for clean, renewable wind technologies here in Kansas.

Renewable energy certificates are one of the strategies used by most of the companies on the EPA’s Top 100 green power users. RECs help these companies to reduce their carbon footprint when the energy they use comes from the power grid.

The renewable certificates in this product are verified and certified by Green-e Energy. Each supplier of renewable certificates is required to disclose the quantity, type and geographic source of each certificate. Green-e Energy also verifies that the renewable certificates are not sold more than once or claimed by more than one party.
