Westar Energy alerts customers to more fraud attempts.
TOPEKA, Kan., Sept. 9, 2014 — Westar Energy encourages customers to be cautious if they receive a call or visit from someone claiming to be from Westar trying to collect money.
“We have had some concerning reports today, so we are reminding customers to be cautious. We’ve been informed that people are using technology that allows them to manipulate caller ID so that these fake collection calls appear to be from Westar. Also, we have received word of an imposter entering businesses and claiming to be from Westar,” Gina Penzig, director, corporate communications, said.
Usually imposters claim payment by prepaid credit card is required right away or electric service will be turned off. “They create a sense of urgency that distracts people from taking the time to question if money is due or if the person is from Westar Energy,” Penzig added.
Here are a few ways customers can protect themselves against these imposters. First, stop and look online to see if your account is current. Second, ask for employee ID; all Westar employees will readily show you their employee badge. Third, give Westar a call at 1-800-383-1183 and ask if we have called you or sent an employee to your location.
“Customers should be quick to ask for ID or to tell us they want to call our customer relations center number to verify an employee,” Penzig said. “We appreciate that they are on the alert and not falling victim to these imposters.”
