Community scholarship opportunities

A minimum of 12 community scholarships will be awarded annually to 12 Kansas high school graduates. For information about community scholarships, please visit with your high school guidance counselor or have your counselor contact Bridget Fitzwater at the Ellis Foundation (bridget@theellisfoundation.org). Scholarship deadline is February 15, 2019.

Craft scholarship opportunities

A minimum of 4 craft scholarships are available for individuals who wish to pursue an associate degree in electric power and distribution, power plant technology, wind energy, industrial technology or other industry-related degrees in Kansas.

Scholarship awards

  • Award amount: $3,000 per year (renewable for 2 years)
Why pursue a degree in electric power and distribution or power plant technology?
  • Starting salary for lineman apprentice: $45,000
  • Starting salary for power plant operator: $44,000
  • Potential opportunities for advancement

Lineman Scholarships

Eligibility Requirements:
  • Must be a Kansas resident
  • Must be a graduating High School Senior or must have graduated the previous year
  • Must pursue a degree in Electric Power and Distribution in Kansas
  • Must be eligible to obtain a Commercial Driver's License
  • Must enroll as a full-time student in a degree program (not required to be enrolled prior to scholarship award, but must be a full-time student in degree program to receive award)
  • Must maintain 2.5 G.P.A. during degree program
  • If 18 years old, must be willing to submit to a Motor Vehicle Records Check (drug free with no DUI convictions)
  • Must participate in a personal interview
  • Must be able to attend a mandatory one day "Lineman Prep Day" on a Saturday in April or May (date has not yet been selected)
Program Selection Process:

Consideration for a Lineman Scholarship will be given to applicants who:

  • Submit a completed application and essay by March 1, 2019
  • Participate in a personal interview on one of the following days: March 11, 12, 13, 14 or 15 (MaryKay Ulrich from Westar/Evergy will call to coordinate this date with you)
  • Females and minorities are strongly encouraged to apply
Program Benefits:

  • Opportunity for direct placement into technical school program (restrictions may apply)
  • Opportunity for internship and future employment with Westar Energy
Logistics for Lineman Prep Day
  • Date: A Saturday in April or May (to be determined)
  • Location: Professional Development Center, 801 NE US Hwy 24, Topeka, KS or Ripley Cabin, 4400 N. Seneca St., Wichita, KS

Power Plant Operator/Wind Energy Scholarship

Typical Jobs at a Power Plant/Wind Farm:

Industrial mechanics, electricians, facility, manufacturing, instrument & control, and wind turbine technicians, power system operators, machinists, engineers, chemical analysis techs, clerks, rescue personnel, environmental coordinators, and analysts.

Eligibility Requirements:
  • Must be a Kansas resident
  • Must be a graduating High School Senior or must have graduated the previous year
  • Must pursue a technical degree at a junior college or trade school for power plant technology, wind energy, industrial technology, or other industry-related degrees
  • Must enroll as a full-time student in a degree program (not required to be enrolled prior to scholarship award, but must be a full-time student in degree program to receive award)
  • Must maintain 2.5 G.P.A. during degree program
Program Selection Process:

Consideration for a Power Plant/Wind Energy Scholarship will be given to applicants who:

  • Submit a completed application and essay by March 1, 2019
  • Attend a mandatory one-day job shadow between March 1 - March 31, 2019
  • Participate in a personal interview
  • Power Plant applicants - Job shadow will be at Jeffrey Energy Center (St. Mary's, KS)
  • Wind energy applicants - Job shadow will be at Central Plains (Marienthal, KS)
